Isobionics uses proprietary microbial engineering and cellular fermentation technology to develop fragrance compounds including lemon, orange, valencene, nookatone, and menthol to name a few. Isobionics is backed by Dutch multinational company Royal DSM (DSM:NA) and in 2019 Isobionics was acquired by German multinational chemical company, BASF. In a press release, BASF representative stated the importance of biotechnology-based ingredients to address the challenges of fluctuating product quality, availability and sustainability. Isobionics develops molecules based on requests from customers and by using biotechnology they can engineer high value molecules including vanillin, valencene and nootkatone more efficiently and at lower costs than if the molecules were extracted from the plants.
