The process begins with a DNA sequence of the intended molecule. Advancements in DNA sequencing technology have made access to DNA quick and inexpensive.

A bacteria or yeast cell aka a microorganism is modified; scientists insert the DNA sequence into the modified microorganism.

The modified microorganism is placed into a fermentation tank where the cells multiply and proteins are formed.
